It's Party ! Time !

You're Invited to the SPACE Birthday Meeting July 12th, 1991

Newz From the Prez July, 1991

Well, I wish everyone a Happy Fourth of July! And don’t forget TERMINATOR 2 opens therefore, what better way to celebrate. Anyways, what is on the agenda?

THE BIRTHDAY MEETING!

The big one is here AGAIN and is going to be wonderful. Please note the enclosed list and make sure you check to see if your name is on it. SPECIAL NOTE, If you missed the last meeting, we all put down our names on the list to bring some food. If you don’t have your name on e list, but plan on attending, we ask that you please bring one of the items on the list. By doing this, you will help make this birthday meeting the biggest bash ever. We have had several very very generous donations of a turkey and cake by Alan Montgomery and of potatoe salads and the like. SPACE will be providing the beverages. We will have a game festival, rattle, door prizes, the works. You will NOT want to miss this meeting, it will be the big big BIG one of the year.

At the last meeting, we were privileged to have Robert Whiffen down free Duluth. Mr. Whiffen is in touch with a user group in his area and is using his ATARI in the business world. He plans to make it down with a friend for our celebration. If so, we might be in for a very unique demonstration.

Nothing much new on the ATARI side. My phone calls only seem to he comming up with more hardware and software houses that have closed out the ATARI. The GOOD news to all of this is our club retailer, Lance Ringquist is still bringing in what new software there is for all ATARI owners to purchase. Help support Lance so he can support the group.

It seems we might have a small turn over of the officers this fall. As announced at a previous meeting, Ken Modeen wantss to move the BBS from his home and doesn’t plan to run again for Vice President. Elections will be coming up in November,if running for an office interests you, think about it and plan to submit your name in October.

That’s about all for now. If there is one meeting I would like to see everyone be at, it is this one. Please come for the biggest and best meeting othe year!

Your humble president, Nathan Block

S.P.A.C.E. MINUTES
For the June 1991 meeting

7:43 The meeting was called to order by the president Nathan Block.

Nathan informed the group that there will he a change on the location of the bbs and a change as the sysop of the bbs as well. Sometime during the late summer or fall of this 1991 year, the bbs will be moved from Ken Modeen’s residence to Larry Serflaten’s residence. Larry will take over as sysop as well at that time. Ken Modeen is now the sysop and Larry Serflaten is now the co-sysop. Ken Modeen is using almost exclusively an IBM system now and his only contact with Atari is the bbs. Ken’s feeling is that the bbs can be better served by one who is still very actively involved in seeking Atari software and new upgrades for atari software.

All details including a new phone number will provided in the newsletter and at meetings as soon as they are known to the parties involved. In the mean time, the bbs will be running as usual probably right up to the day it is moved. It is not anticipated to be down for much more than a day when it is moved.

The meeting then turned to the subject of the july birthday party. It was agreed that the birthday meeting will be held at our normal meeting center. The reasons for that decision were, that anyone who is not a member and is not in contact with the club other than the meetings, would not show up at an empty meeting center on the july meeting date. Also we can still have power for all our toys and demos. It was agreed that we would have much of the festivities outdoors at the meeting center. Joe Danko said he could supply a canopy for the outdoors festivities. Ken Modeen said he would help set it up.

The club will be supplying the pop and coffee for the party. A roasted turkey and a cake are being donated by a member, Allen Montgomery, a kind gesture indeed, Much appreciated by the membership of S.P.A.C.E..

A list was passed around for members to sign up to give food donations, help clean up or whatever they could do.

Robert Whiffen, who is a member of our group and also a member of the P.A.C.E. user group in Duluth where he resides was at the meeting. Nathan Block introduced him and Bob said a few words on behalf of P.A.C.E. It seems P.A.C.E. is both am eight bit and an ST user group in one. It has about half the number of our members. The newsletter is a multi-group affair known as A.I.M. The A.I.M. newsletter has been discussed at our meetings before, when the cost of publishing our own newsletter was much greater than it is now. Mr. Whiffen would like you all to know the phone number of the P.A.C.E. bbs in Superior Wis. 715-394-8329. Their bbs is a 100 meg system run on locally developed software up there with much to offer.

Ken Modeen mentioned that Powered Sales Co. which was a surplus computer store that burned up over in columbia heights last winter, has opened at a new location.
1625 Washington st N.E.
Mpls Mn. 55421
781-3021
Very good prices on new and rebuilt computer equipment.

Michael Fitzpatrick is looking for support of any kind concerning the operation of an Omnicon 80 column board which he found on an Atari 800 that he purchased used. The upgrade board is installed on the computer, and Mike is looking for answers on how to activate it and use it. If anyone remembers any details on this upgrade board please contact Mike at a meeting or via the bbs.

8:10 the meeting was closed.

SPACE Disk Library News for July, 1991

>>>>>>>HAPPY BIRTHDAY Saint Paul ATARI Comuter Enthusiasts<<<<

SPACE is nine years of age this month. SPACE members have been doing whatever it is we do for a long time. I have seen members kids grew up over the years and there has been a steady loss of members to the siren call of higher technology and more popular systems but we remain here for those who still believe that ATARI is the best computer to use at home for fun. The SPACE Library has come a long way since the days in 1982 when more cassettes than disks were sold each month. The amount of new material has diminished to the vanishing point but running the software library has become a challenge in keeping up with the demand to package and supply what is available in better and cheaper ways. My hat is off to Glen Kirschenmann who most members know as the guy in the crewcut who does 99.9% of the selling and organizing of the disks. All I have to do is feed him the software and write the articles. I was ready to get out from under this business until Glen became involved and changed my mind. I really enjoy collecting software and making it usable by the members. The hardisk system the club paid for and Rich Mier and I put together has also helped a great deal. I have a lot more flexibility in handling the large number of files at my disposal and the demands on my time are greatly reduced. Due to a crunch in May and June and a nasty Sociology class I did not even have a Disk of the Month ready until the day before the June meeting, therefore, no June newsletter article. There will be a makeup article in July.

Thanks to Red for the loan of the Phoenix disks. I have found quite a bit of materiel we don’t have. Thanks also to all of the folks who are keying in programs from the Math and Statistics disk that were corrupted. As soon as I get them all in I will reissue the disk. It is actually a collection of all of the programs in the ATARI version of Some Common Basic Programs by Osbourne Press and it is available at the library.

AS I WAS SITTING AT THE LAST MEETING, AND HEARD PLANS OF THE UP CONING JULY PARTY AND MEETING I THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT IS HAS TAKEN TO GET UP TO ANOTHER PARTY FOR THE SPACE CLUB. I THINK IT HAS TAKEN ALOT OF CONMITTMENT BY ALOT OF PEOPLE. THE OFFICERS HAVE WORKED HARD TO HAVE A FUN AND INTERESTING CLUB. I SUPPOSE IT IS BECAUSE OF THEIR LOVE OF COMPUTORS AND THEY WANT TO SHARE IT WITH OTHER PEOPLE AND BESIDES THE OFFICERS, THE MEMBERS THAT KEEP COMING TO THE MEETINGS AND THEIR KEEPING THE CLUB STRONG. I THINK THOUGH FOR THE FUTURE WE HAVE TO MAINTAIN THIS STRENGH BY ADVERTISING THE CLUB AND COMMUNICATING WITH OTHER ATARI CLUBS AROUND THE COUNTRY AND MAYBE EVEN INTERNATIONALLY. I THINK THIS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED VERY INPORTANT.

ANOTHER THOUGHT RAN THROUGH MY MIND AT THE JUNE MEETING. IT IS THE END OF A CHAPTER OF THE CLUB AND THE START OF A NEW CHAPTER. A NEW SYSOP FOR THE CLUB AND THE OLD SYSOP STEPPING DOWN. THANKS FOR DOING A GOOD JOB KEN AND CONGRADULATIONS LARRY! NATHAN BLOCKS GRADUATION FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND LOOKING FORWARD TO COLLEGE AND NEW CHALLENGES. GOOD LUCK!

LAST OF ALL , I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ROBERT WHIFFEN FOR ATTENDING OUR JUNE MEETING. I HAVE WANTED TO MEET HIM FOR A LONG TIME. I HEARD HE IS A GREAT CHEF. ONE OF THESE DAYS I WOULD LIKE TO VISIT THE RESTAURANT HE WORKS. HOPE YOU CAN MAKE IT TO THE PARTY IN JULY AT OUR MEETING. GREAT TO SEE OTHER SYSOP’S FROM OTHER BULLETIN BOARDS VISITING US ON A REGULAR BASIS. WELL THAT IS ABOUT ALL! SEE YOU AT THE SPACE BIRTHDAY IN JULY!
