Newz from the Prez
MARCH 1991

Hello again everyone! I hope you are enjoying your last bit of winter, the sun has been popping out quite a bit more often lately. Personally winter is my favorite time of year. Also remember, your computer will run much better to the cold than in the heat! Ask anybody with a hard drive!

The February turn out was a little bit smaller than January, but I must say I am very pleased at how many members we have had turning out. It is much better than it has been in previous years. I would like to see an even bigger turnout for the March and April meetings! The club I think is finally settled as far as all the officer systems and other business matters and I would like to get some quality feedback at the meetings as to the direction the club should go. Our club has quite a bit to offer the ATARI user. We have a VERY substantial disk and paper library. We have a club retailer who brings new software to the meetings, swap meets at every meeting, and we have some very knowledgable and helpful ATARI users. What kind of new things would you like to see the club do? We have had several people attempt to start programming sub groups and the like. PLEASE come to the meetings and give suggestions. I want SPACE to grow and expand to help the ATARI user even more in 1991!

I don’t have much news from ATARI or anybody else for that matter. The world’s eyes are fixed on Kuwait right now and not as much on computers. I have been trying to compile a list of mail order houses that still support ATARI, but keep running into dead ends. I do have some addresses which I will bring to the meeting after I verify them.

For now that is about it. Please make an effort to come to the meetings and give feedback on the club! And please pray for a speedy end to the war in the Middle East.

Your President,
Nathan Block

MINUTES OF THE SPACE MEETING February 8, 1991

by Pat Krenn, Secretary

1. The meeting was called to order by President Nathan Block at 7:40 P.M.

2. The meeting started off with an auction of the equipment purchased from the Guadalupe Project. The equipment sold was:

Equipment Minimum Sold Purchaser
Sold Bid Amount

130XE w/128K $70 $85 Sherm Erickson
65XE w/64K $47.50 $47.50 Steven Christopherson
600XL w/16K $15 $15 Joe Danko
1050 Disk Dr. $55 $65 Bill Cadwell
810 Disk Dr. $45 no-bid Sale postponed

3. If you purchased the game disks for $1 before Christmas, bring the disks back; new disks are being offered in exchange with problems corrected. Some games will not load or execute.

4. Mike Schmidt suggested that members write articles for the newsletter on old software which they use; we NEED information on Atari’s to be exchanged through the newsletter.

5. The Midwinter Madness Electronic Show is February 9th; it is usually worthwhile to attend since you never know what you will find.

6. It was suggested that SPACE should advertise on the different cable companies public access channels; the ad from Computer User will be placed on the public access channel.

7. Hardware Problem - Mark Vallevand reported that his 1050 with the US Doubler disk drive will run for a couple of hours and then get read errors. Club members felt it was running hot and Joe Danko recommended getting a small fan and placing it next to the drive.

8. Mark Vallevand has collected the news from USENET on Atari computers; it’s mostly adds with Atari’s for sale, if anyone is interested.

9. It was reported that the Banks store at Central and E. Hennepin has XE GS systems going for $25 in the basement and XE GS systems for $50 up on 3rd floor; this is a warehouse store dealing in liquidations and damaged freight.

10. The Computer Station at Diamond Lake Road and Nicollet in south Minneapolis has more 8-bit software; also does consignment selling.

11. Lance from Video 61 is selling software and hardware items in the back of the room; he has some new games for $9.95.

12. The club’s modem is available for use by a member; first come, first served on using the club’s modem at your home.

13. Six people joined SPACE this evening; it was asked how they found out about the club: 4 were renewing members; 1 was an old member coming back; and the last was a member of the defunct TAIG club.

14. The meeting concluded at 8:35 P.M. with the demonstration of BBS usage and the demonstrations of the DOMs.

End of the minutes for the February 9th, 1991 SPACE meeting.

Respectfully submitted by Pat Krenn, Secretary

SPACE DISK LIBRARY NEWS - March, 1990

Due to pressing events of all kinds in late January, i missed the deadline for the February newsletter, only the second time that has happened in over three years. Thanks Glen Kirshenmann, the library still has kept going. I have a lot of news, so let’s get going.

The LIBRARIAN now has a hard disk(that’s me). I bought a very nice Case with fan, power supply and mounting for the SASI controller at Midwinter Madness for $10. It even included an odd disk drive which we can not use. I suppose this disk would be for sale. It is a combination fixed 5 Meg and REMOVABLE 5 meg that should interface to any MFM controller. I would try it on my AT clone, but I just don’t have the time. Mike Schmidt also has one.

We also have a case with no fan and a bad power supply that would be for sale for a nominal sum and 2 SASI disk controllers that may or may not work. While I am talking about stuff for sale, we also have an 810 disk drive and an 800XL that are available to purchase.

Thanks to the generosity of Steve Engalsbe, we have the loan of the first 34 TAIG DOMs. The first 6 or so disks contain some really old stuff that never showed up in the SPACE LIBRARY as close as I can determine. TAIG stands for Twin Cities Atari Interest Group and they predated SPACE by a number of months back in 1982. TAIG is long since defunct but its LIBRARY lives on.

Glen Kirshenmann has been extremely busy rebuilding and packageing the DOLLAR DISKS and most categories will be for sale at the March SPACE meeting. If anyone has defective disks from the first run they can be returned for replacement.

Midwinter Maddness:
SUBMITTED BY MICHAEL WEIST:

Mike Schmidt thought it would be nice for me to give my impression of the Midwinter Madness Show. Mike, Larry Serflatten, and I worked at the show. I found the Midwinter Madness Show better than the Hamfest I worked at in Brooklyn Center. I didn’t like the tables set-up in the corridors of the school. At the Midwinter Madness Show, all the booths and tables for the show were set-up in one big gym.

We had lots of people stop by who were interested in software in connection with Ham Radio set-up. We also had several young people interested in the game DRACONUS. They would be at our table playing that game for what seemed like hours.

A lot of the people who stopped had questions about ATARI Equipment and Software. It was very interesting to listen to Mike and Larry answering questions. I think I learned quite a bit while listening to both of them.

We sold eleven (11) software disks and almost everyone who stopped took applications with them. We had a few SPACE members stop by to visit and say HI! Mike and Joe Danko picked up some bargins, so did I.

It seems by listening to people that stopped at our table, alot of them had put their ATARi equipment away to gather dust in a closet somewhere after the decline of the ATARI market, but I think several of them will be dusting off their equipment and start using it again with the knowledge that there is ATARI support in the form of SPACE, with software, hardware, and technical support available.

I found the show to be an exciting experience and can’t wait till the next one. I think that we might see a few new members to the SPACE club in the future because of our table at the Midwinter Madness!

Author: Amos Jackson To: All

It looks like the idea of networking a tech base with SPACE has faded into oblivion, for even though I’ve received ALOT of positive response from users themselves, I haven’t heard anything from the officers of SPACE.

Still I hope the idea isn’t dead, and that it can be tried on a trial basis. That way if it doesn’t work out, all of the settings can be altered. Hopefully the problem isn’t that Warp 10 is a free speech bbs. It’s not totally free, for there is a clause that states that no profanity will be used on Warp 10. That is grounds for blacklisting.

Hopefully this time around I’ll at least be able to find out a solid yes or no on the networking idea with SPACE and if so we can get it initialized.

On another front, my sources in Florida have informed me that Keith Ledbetter has sold the rights, and the PRO support bbs. At this time, the support bbs is not online and future plans are unknown.

The support for networking may have jumped on the TURTLEs back, (moving slowly) but it hasnt faded away! I do feel the SYSOP should be fully aware of the charges, so that he can be on hand should any difficulties arise. I have contacted our SYSOP about this opportunity. He may still be looking into what needs to be done to make the addition permanent. ANY COMMENTS SYSOP?

Message: 32 - Reply to #16 Title: Faded Away....

The reason there has been little response from the officers, is simple. At meetings, we introduce ideas to the membership, we try to get their questions about it answered as well as we can, then we all as a group make a decision. Either at that meeting or subsequent meetings, as all the information becomes available. Thats the process. I as the sysop have no qualms with networking. I have no opinions on it at all, FOR or AGAINST. Its just that there is a process here, we are a group of people.

Message: 36 - Reply to #32 Title: Faded Away....

Which is clearly understood and known by all. No one is saying to forget the process, but to respond to an idea about communications.

To me, that is also part of the process. Someone get’s an idea, and speaks about it to see what kind of acceptance. It’s a good way to find out if something should be brought up at a meeting.

Almost all the people that BBS here are members, are they not? Why don’t we just get a group vote on the subjet riqht here, right now? This would be for SPACE members only!

We don’t get a vote, because all the members don’t BBS. Everyone is entitled to a say. I know it sounds funny (what does one care if one doesn’t BBS anyway), but I think Space decisions should be made by SPACE, at meetings. There is no rush on this networking thing. It will be available tommorrow as well as today.

Only aboput 35% of the SPACE members regularly use a modem. They are a part of the SPACE club and have a say in the BBS, even if they don’t personelly use it.

I’d have to go with the procdure (sp) rule that SPACE has adapted for it’s membership, and would rather see everyone included that should be in the voting process.

After all, that’s the entire concept that I have around the networking.

But the people that don’t get on here don’t need to vote because they don’t use the BBS, it doesn’t pertain to them, only the people that use it really care if you network.

HAVE YOU LEFT A MESSAGE WITH THE SYSOP AND OR CO-SYSOP HERE ON SPACE? I REALLY DON’T THINK IT’S UP TO THE OFFICERS OF SPACE TO DECIDE, BUT THE USERS OF THE BBS.

Yes, I agree, but it’s up to all to get things going in one direction or another. Everyone has an opinion and everyone counts. As stated, there’s been alot of positive response from the users, but none from officers, and they are also an important factor of SPACE. We can’t forget about them can we?? hahaha!

CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT NETWORKING IS?

Message: 27 Title: What Is Networking?!?
Author: Amos Jackson To: MICHAEL WEIST (Recvd)

Networking is the setting up of TWO or more systems to communicate with each other for the purpose of exchanging messages or information.

The networking process is FULLY automatic. One system will call the other to receive messages that have been stored for retrieval for that system (node). As an example, Warp 10 would call SPACE at let’s say 2AM. The systems would ‘handshake’ and the node number would be intentified as well as a password (almost like being a regular user). The message transfer would then start if all security information was correct.

If we for example networked the tech base and the for sale/wanted bases, only NEW messages from those two bases would be transfered to Warp 10 (except for the very first net, then all messages in those two bases would be transfered). The messages would then be placed in the tech and for sale bases at Warp 10.

For SPACE to get it’s messages from Warp 10, SPACE bbs would then call Warp 10, go through the same securiity, handshake, then get all of it’s messages. They would then be transfered to the two message areas here. All of this would happen while the sysop’s (and most of the rest of us) sleep!

BELIEVE ME!!! I AM looking forward to getting back to a SPACE meeting!! It has been TOO long, and there’s too many IMPORTANT friends and relationships that I have at SPACE to just totally forget about! The only factor for me is transportation, but if I can get that worked out, I will be there!!

CONS:

Having to take the time to set up a slot for a computer on each system (not really any trouble).

Having to take the time to set up each system (not really any trouble - just having to find the time to do so).

PROS:

The biggest: A SHOW OF UNITY IN THE ATARI COMMUNITTY!(sorry- rhymes)

Having the capability to communicate with many, many more users because of branching out in new directions.

Creating AND maintaining a relationship that will benefit the entire Atari community.

Not having to post the exact same information on more than one bbs.

Creating a better support base.

Setting up a new user may be easily accomplished, once the two sysops agree on a password. Perhaps with your expertise you could describe the procedure needed to set up the system in a text file that could stay with the BBS and be passed on to the future SYSOPS who wish to NETWORK...

Message: 43 - Reply to #23 Title: NETWORKING News
Author: DAVID SHELDON To: Co-Sysop (Recvd)

I think that since there are a limited number of Atari users in the area it would be a very good idea to network all of the systems in some way. This would propably help to maintain some kind of communication ==going between ALL of the the members of the 8 and 16 bit Atari world.

Thats just my opinion but with so little support for the Atari in the way of software, hardware, and all of the other good stuff that goes along with a POPULAR product. The users should stick together to get the support they need.

IN OTHER WORDS JUST DO IT!

This is just a general purpose net, as we’re saving the better base netting for a later date (the point when the membership of SPACE desides for or against joining the network). All are invited to join in and get the ‘feel’ of what networking is like, and it will give all interested parties a chance to see what all of the ‘fuss’ is about (hahahaha).
